Giants End Devils’ Unbeaten Home Start with 4-1 Win
Belfast Giants beat Cardiff Devils 4-1 at Vindico Arena, ending the Devils’ unbeaten home start in the Elite Ice Hockey League. Cardiff had won all 14 of their home league, cup and pre-season matches in 2026-27 before the defeat.

How the Giants took control
The teams were level after a goalless first period. Belfast broke through in the second when David Goodwin scored on the powerplay, then Scott Conway added another goal to give the visitors a two-goal lead.
Logan Cockerill extended Belfast’s advantage early in the third. Thomas Caron then scored his first goal for Cardiff, but the Devils’ response did not change the result: Kaleb Pearson converted a penalty shot to restore the Giants’ three-goal margin.
What the defeat means for Cardiff
The result ended a home run that covered 14 matches across three competitions and formats. It was Cardiff’s first home loss of the EIHL season, although the club remained top of the league standings with nine points from six games.
Cardiff were due to host Guildford Flames on Saturday, 31 October. The Devils had also been confirmed as Challenge Cup semi-finalists after Sheffield Steelers beat Manchester Storm 5-2.
Thompson points to a demanding weekend
Devils head coach Paul Thompson said his side struggled to make its game work, with and without the puck, and credited Belfast with deserving the win. He described the performance as well below the level he expected from his team.
Cardiff had played two Challenge Cup matches the previous weekend, winning 4-2 away to Nottingham Panthers and 1-0 at home to Sheffield Steelers. Thompson said he had used players for heavy minutes across those games and wondered whether the demands had affected the team against Belfast. He stressed that he was not making excuses, but said Cardiff lacked energy and were repeatedly beaten to the puck.
What remains to be seen
Cardiff’s next listed fixture was the home game against Guildford on 31 October. Whether the Devils could respond in that match, while remaining top of the EIHL standings, was still to be decided; the Belfast result itself left their previously unbeaten home record behind them.
